The pound has reached a 4 month high against the Euro

The pound yesterday reached €1.1455, a level not seen since last October, good news for those planning half term breaks and skiing holidays!

The rise was on the back of a record jump of consumer prices released by the Office for National Statistics, up from 1.9% in December to 2.9% in December. This saw the pound climb from €1.1382 to €1.1455.

This hike in inflationary figures has persuaded the markets that the scheme of printing more money, quantitative easing, has done its job and that the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee could be forced to raise base rates sooner than expected.

Kenneth Broux, market economist at Lloyd’s Banking in London said ’All the inflation measures were up. It’s going to be very hard for the BoE to continue quantitative easing.’
